Abstract
The article reports a preoperative psychological study of 70 patients who weighed at least 100% more than their ideal weight. The present study examined psychological features of morbidly obese patients who were seeking jejunoileal bypass surgery after they had tried unsuccessfully other weight reduction methods. Of the 70 patients, 62 were considered by combined psychological-psychiatric opinion to be favorable risks for jejunoileal bypass surgery. By use of standard personality tests and a structured psychiatric interview, it was found that 89% were judged to be psychologically favorable risks for the operation.
