I specifically study this relationship just after the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008, when publics in rich democracies were aware of their economic weakness. Using survey data from the European Social Survey (ESS) after 2008, as well as product trade data from UN Comtrade between the 1990s and 2010s, I can measure whether a survey participant worked in an industry that had a long-run trade advantage, a long-run trade disadvantage, or was not traded. Using matching methods, I pair survey participants working in different types of industries but who are otherwise similar on continuous observable characteristics and otherwise equal on observable categorical characteristics. I find that, all-else equal, participation in a trade-disadvantaged industry (a) does not have statistically significant on voting for a populist party and (b) has a statistically significant but small effect on voting for an authoritarian party. These results are inconsistent with the recent literature on globalization and populism, which argues that personal exposure to globalization causes populism. I interpret this finding to mean that the appeal of populist and authoritarian parties is more about social and cultural concerns than about economic concerns.▲ | ||

요약주기
I study whether being employed in a trade-disadvantaged industry affects the probability of voting for a populist or authoritarian political party. I interpret this finding to mean that the appeal of populist and authoritarian parties is more about social and cultural concerns than about economic concerns.
