Abstract
The magnitudes of the illusory distortions apparent in the Ponzo figure and in three newly devised spatial patterns are estimated. Comparison of these with an appropriate control situation indicates that significant spatial distortions remain present in configurations which do not necessarily define angular contexts. Implications of these findings for 'the perspective theory' of illusions and for 'the carpentered world hypothesis' are discussed.
