Abstract
Part of a special issue on the sociology of education in Taiwan. The relationships between education and economic and political development in Taiwan are discussed. The simultaneous appearance of educational expansion and economic growth and the rising educational level of the labor force led some to believe that education helps economic development. While the second-wave peak growth of Taiwan did occur after educational expansion and structural change, there has been insufficient study on the rate of return on educational investment. Education helps consolidate political authority and maintain stability on and off campus. However, education's influence on democratic politics is weak. It is reflected only in the political attitude of the individual and in voting and has shown no influence on the reform of the political structure.
