Abstract
Chinese, 15th – 16th century, male. Active in Baoying (Jiangsu Province) c. 1480-1532. Painter, draughtsman. Portraits, animals, landscapes, flowers. A poet, painter and calligrapher, Tao Cheng passed the provincial civil service examinations in 1471 and was granted the title juren (graduate). Although he seems to have been a strange person, he nonetheless found a few rich patrons who protected him, and although his range was limited he excelled in small-format blue and green landscapes, portraits and bird and flower paintings....
