The ASEAN-EU dialogue is one of the longest-lasting bilateral relationships for both organizations. Yet there remain numerous and significant gaps in our knowledge of the evolution and present stage of the different dimensions of ASEAN-EU relations. Based on a quantitative analysis of 99 titles on ASEAN-EU relations, in English and German, published in Southeast Asia and Europe, this paper highlights the importance of institutional support, especially in Southeast Asia, in the production of knowledge about ASEAN-EU relations. Following Max Weber, the paper attributes the crucial role of institutional support to the material conditions in which scholarship is carried out in Southeast Asia. Finally, it proposes an agenda for research for Southeast Asian and European institutions of higher learning.
