Abstract
Survey by the Lemba Archaeological Project in W Cyprus aims to investigate the nature and extent of regional interaction on the island prior to the Bronze Age. A three-tier strategy of inventory research, extensive and intensive survey has led to the identification of more than 150 sites of the Neolithic-Chalcolithic periods. Emphasis in artefact analysis has been placed on the multivariate processing of ceramics and the chaîne opératoire of chipped stone tools. These refined methodologies furnish the detailed evidence necessary to achieve our research aims. Data from selected survey sites are presented here and examined against the backdrop of LAP excavations at Kissonerga, Lemba and Mylouthkia. Although study of the material is still in progress, results attained thus far demonstrate a greater degree of complexity in inter-site contacts among the prehistoric communities of the island than has previously been apparent.
