Abstract The oral cavity reflects the general state of health of the patient. A thorough examination of the oral cavity will provide clinicians with information important to assessment of the patient. Through this exam, clinicians can diagnose specific oral diseases and relevant vitamin and mineral deficiencies or toxicities. This article reviews the appropriate procedures for examination of the mouth, tongue, teeth, and gums and discusses various abnormalities and their potential etiologies.
