Abstract
The authors explore the genetics of coat pigmentation in tabby cats. The distinct and heritable coat patterns of domestic cats such as ticked, mackerel, blotched and spotted are characterized. It is explained that random coat patterns arise from stochastically initiated incidents like the inactivation of X chromosome in female cats. A discussion regarding the pigmentation-oriented mechanism in tabby coat striping is also given.
