Abstract
This study examines liaison on the basis of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century private letters, exchanged during France’s first period of colonization. Liaison appears in these letters consistently, though following conventions that were never adopted in texts written by a well-educated layer of society, whether it be handwritten or printed texts. Contrary to the traditional view, liaison in this correspondence is therefore not closely connected to advanced written skills. It is precisely this observed non-conformity with the written culture which makes the analyzed sample insightful material for the study ofthe distribution of liaison during the Classical period.
