Abstract
In designing equipment to satisfy a technical objective, the final choice is usually based on minimization of some objective function, e.g., the construction cost, the annual operating cost, or the pay-back time of the investment. In this study, the technical solutions corresponding to these various optima are determined and compared on the basis of a very simple, single-tube heat recuperator. It is shown that the various optima may differ greatly from each other. A new diagram involving energy-cost characteristic (ECCHAR) curves is presented for comparison of the various optima. 15 refs.
