Abstract
A Midland, Michigan business school is an example of large electricity users seeking relief from high utility rates by buying heat and light from third-party cogenerators. Decker Energy International Inc. (DEI) built three 60kW pre-packaged cogeneration units at the site at no cost to the customer, then contracted to sell electricity and heat at 10% below utility rates. DEI also handles routine maintenance at the facility. The 180 kW system provides only half the school's electric power because of a fluctuating load pattern and the utility's unwillingness to buy back excess power. The school can purchase the equipment after the 8-year expires.
