Abstract
The prevalence of arterial hypertension, awareness of the diagnosis, antihypertensive treatment and blood pressure control was measured in a nationally representative population sample comprising both genders and age groups from 20 to 89 years. The age adjusted prevalence was 22,3%. A total of 72% of the hypertensives were aware of their diagnosis, 64% were receiving treatment and 68% of those treated were well-controlled. Diagnosis and treatment was insufficient, but blood pressure control in those treated was better than previously reported and comparable to that found in controlled trials.
