Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of palliative care needs and recommendations to advance health equity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) cancer patients and their families. LGBTQI people have historically experienced criminalization, discrimination, and denial of health care. As a result of long-standing social stigma, health care delays, and maladaptive coping mechanisms, some LGBTQI people have a higher risk for certain cancers. Fear of health care discrimination varies by age/generation and other intersectional lived experiences. This chapter provides an overview of historical discrimination of LGBTQI persons and provides guidance on nondiscrimination policies, employment policies, intake practices, community outreach and marketing, affirming communication, and comprehensive palliative care services to ensure that LGBTQI people with cancer receive respectful, dignified care near the end of life.
