Abstract
French, 20th – 21st century, male. Born 1959, in Brazzaville, Congo. Sculptor, painter, draughtsman, performance artist. Figures. After studying biology and philosophy, Olivier de Sagazan turned to the visual arts and began exploring different techniques. He now lives and works in St-Nazaire. His sculptures might best be described as figures in search of an identity. They comprise disparate mineral (clay, laterite, slate and kaolin) and organic (cinders, hemp, bone gelatine) elements. His figures are single nudes or nude pairs of different heights and girths, typically caught in poses connoting expectation, prostration or shock and amazement, their wrinkled, parched earth-like features a sign of the passage of time. Like his sculpture, his paintings typically show nude couples rendered against an empty monochrome background, their form and colour dictated by the primordial slime from which they emerge.
