Abstract
In this paper, we use Mocopi, a low-cost motion capture equipment, to create animations from motion capture data of traditional dances and propose the potential for secondary creations based on this data. Traditional dance is an important cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations, but it is currently facing a crisis of disconnection due to the lack of successors and issues with the designation of national intangible cultural properties. While there have been some efforts in domestic research and initiatives to capture traditional dances as motion capture data, the number of such endeavors has been limited due to various challenges, including cost and costume-related issues. However, recent advancements in visual intelligence models and the emergence of affordable smart sensors have significantly reduced the cost and effort required for motion capture. In this study, we invited experts who are cultural transmitters of Jinju sword dance, a national intangible cultural asset, to conduct motion capture using mocopi and obtain data of Jinju sword dance. This data can be utilized to recreate traditional dances in virtual environments, with local characters or iconic landmarks as backgrounds. This endeavor holds significant social value as it strives to preserve our valuable traditional dances, which are currently at risk of being lost, and it introduces a novel approach to preserving and promoting traditional culture in a modern context.
