Abstract
In Yi Sang literature, the number “13” is one of the most discussed topics, and various interpretations of it have been presented. In Yi Sang’s literary texts, “13” is identified three times. With regard to the foregoing, the number 13 was considered with three possibilities left open in relation to Japanese literature. First, the number 13 was examined regarding its relationship with the “13-person club” in Japanese literary circles. This is because the members of the 13- person club were a modernist coterie and Yi Sang devoted himself to modernism. Next, its connection with the magazine 13 People, in which Shinichi Makino participated, was raised. This is because Yi Sang expressed a deep respect for Makino and much of his acceptance is recognized in his works. Next, it was examined with its relationship with proletarian literature in mind. It was assumed that the expression “13” three times represents the structure of literary circles in Korea and Japan, where the proletariat and modernism were in binary opposition at the time. It was concluded that rather than expressing direct opposition to or fear of proletarian literature, Yi Sang concretized his unstable artistic existence as a modernist who lost his orientation in the circumstances of the times with “Child of 13” and “13”.
