말의 상징성을 소재로 한 도자 표현 연구 / A Study on Ceramic Expressions based on Symbolism of Horse

Abstract
인간은 사물이나 어떠한 형태에 의미를 부여하여 상징을 만들고 이를 종교나 예술로 표현해왔다. 이 중 동물을 통한 표현은 빙하시대(BC6000∼BC10000)부터 나타나며, 시간이 흘러 문화의 양상이 복잡해질수록 동물이 가진 상징도 다양해졌다. 본 연구에서는 동물 중 말의 상징성을 통해 인간 소외, 가치관의 혼란 등의 문제로 정신적 빈곤을 겪고 있는 현대인들에게 인간 본연의 생명력, 삶에 대한 희망 등의 긍정적 이미지를 불어 넣어주고자 하였다. 말은 높은 지능, 강한 힘, 빠른 속도, 친화적인 성격을 고루 갖추어 인류 역사의 초기부터 농경, 운송, 전쟁 등에서 역할을 수행하였고, 인간과 깊은 관계를 맺고 다양한 상징을 갖게 된 동물이기 때문이다. 이를 위해 말의 역사와 인간과의 관계, 말의 생김새와 성격, 말의 상징성을 조사하고, 이전의 말을 소재로 한 작품들을 연구하여 새로운 말의 형태를 제작하였다. 말의 상징들은 공통으로 삶과 내세(來世)에서의 안녕(安寧)과 희망을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 말의 상징을 작품에 담아 보는 이가 인간 본연의 생명력과 삶에 대한 희망을 느끼게 하고자 하였다. 말은 몸에 많은 굴곡을 가지고 있고, 커다랗고 근육이 많아 한눈에 보기에도 강한 힘을 느끼게 하지만 본 연구에서의 말은 희망적으로 표현하고자 둥그렇게 제작하여 부드럽고 따듯한 힘을 느낄 수 있게 하였다. 또 말의 상징성을 효과적으로 전달하기 위하여 편자, 집, 나비, 상자, 기와, 원 등의 요소에 의미를 부여하여 함께 구성하였다. 본 연구의 결과가 현대인들의 삶에 활력과 희망을 불어 넣어줄 수 있는 기회를 제공하기를 기대한다.
Human being gave a meaning to a thing or a shape to create symbols and expressed it through religion or art. Among those, expressions through animals appeared from the Ice Age and symbols of animals became diversified pursuant to complexity of cultural aspect as time went by. Through symbolism of a horse out of animals, this study intended to inspire positive image such as human intrinsic life force and hope for a life to modern people who experience mental poverty due to such problems as human alienation and confusion of values. It is because evenly getting high intelligence, strong power, high speed, and friendly character, a horse performed a role in agriculture, transportation, and war from the beginning of human history and it is an animal of varied symbols with close relationships with human being. For this, the study investigated history of horse, relationships with human being, appearance and character of a horse and symbolism of a horse and then, it manufactured a shape of a new horse through researches of works based on previous horses. Symbols of horses commonly have peace and hope in this life and afterlife. This study contained symbols of horses in a work and aimed to make an audience feel human intrinsic life force and hope for a life. Horse makes us feel strong power at a glance because it has many curves on its body with large and many muscles but this study manufactured it round with a hopeful expression so that audience can feel soft and warm force. Also, in order to effectively transmit symbolism of a horse, a meaning was given to elements of such as horseshoe, stable, box, roof tile and circle to organize them all together. It is expected that results of this study will provide modern people with a chance to inspire vitality and hope to their life.
