Abstract
A 63-year-old Japanese businessman who had lived in the Republic of Indonesia for 5 years was infected with hepatitis A virus and admitted to our hospital. Liver damage improved spontaneously to some extent, but the aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase levels remained abnormal. Despite amelioration of the hepatitis A virus infection, the high serum anti LKM-1 antibody titer and serum IgG levels persisted. A liver biopsy was performed and the patient was diagnosed with probable autoimmune hepatitis (AIH, type II) based on the scoring system of the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group. He was started on 30 mg of prednisolone daily, which cured the AIH. This case was very rare, not only because AIH was induced by hepatitis A virus infection, but also because the AIH subtype was type II.
