Abstract
Diffuse infiltrative carcinoma of the colon is rare and 244 cases have been reported since 1976 in Japan. A 50-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and tumor. Physical examination showed an elastic hard mass sized as 8×5cm was palpable in the left lower quadrant of her abdomen. Roentogenogram showed the area of calcification was observed around the border of the tumor. Barium enema examination showed a stenotic area as long as 13cm in the sigmoid colon. Colonoscopically stricture was observed at 50cm from the anal verge and fiberscope could not be passed through. Biopsy specimen showed signet ring cell carcinoma. Operative finding showed the tumor invaded into the retroperitoneum and left ovary (H0, P3, S3, N2 (+) , Stage V) . So non-curative surgery was done, and a part of the sigmoid colon and left ovary have been resected. Macroscopically, resected specimen showed a severely thickened wall with fibrosis and invasion of the carcinoma. Histologically, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was observed with mucinous carcinoma in part, which in volved the area of calcification.
