Abstract
Radiolabeled acetate is incorporated into amitinol, ispedienol, and ipsenol by male Ips paraconfusus and Ips pini thereby providing a direct proof for de novo biosynthesis of ipsenol, ipsdienol and amitinol by bark beetles. The females of this species does not produce labeled or nonlabeled pheromone components. Analysis of HPLC purified clusters having radiolabeled components by GC-MS reveals only purified alcohols. The myrcene-derived acyclic monoterpene alcohols, ipsenol and ipsdienol are released by these California five-spined ips as part of their aggregation pheromones.
