CDL In the Middle Years classroom: Where we started and what might yet be

Abstract
In this piece, we reflect on our own shared past work on critical digital literacies (CDLs) and the many conversations we have had with researchers and educators that have refined this work.. We share two examples of CDL projects we have each used in our respective classrooms and discuss ways they may be useful in middle years classrooms and why teacher readers may wish to adopt and adapt them. In the latter part of the article, we focus on civic engagement and audience, two concepts that are tied to CDLs. Looking closely at how CDLs can foster civic engagement and carefully considering tensions around the audience for school CDL projects, we suggest, are just two of the many ways CDLs remain relevant today.
