Abstract
The general view that adolescence is an age of deep discontent is tested empirically using the subjective well-being, defined as an overall evaluation of one’s life. In the first study, the global and domain satisfaction of 1155 high-school (age 14–19) and 851 college students (age 18-30) in Bihor were investigated using Personal Well-being Index. Respondents reported higher levels of subjective well-being (males 80.5, females 77.6) than college students (males 74.7, females 73.6). These levels are also higher than those measured earlier for the general population. In the second study, using a sample of 3509 students from Oradea enrolled from the 8th to the 12th grades, it was found that life satisfaction and Personal Well-being Index also decrease with age. One of the possible explanations is that parental economic and affective support act as a buffer against the difficulties of socioeconomic transition. The structure of domain satisfactions is different at adolescence than at other ages: the level of living has less influence to satisfaction with life as a whole, and satisfaction with health and personal security also contribute to the explanation of the variation of this variable. The results would encourage us to predictthat the levels of subjective well-being can grow in Romania with the economical and social development.
