Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the subjective perceptions of parents on their parental roles and to classify those perceptions to better understand them. The study Q method was used to classify the parents’ subjective perceptions on the parental roles. 33 samples were selected as Q sample through statements relating to parents’ perceptions. The subjects of this study were parents who are studying children education or who are currently teaching children. They were interviewed from September to October 2018. QUANL program was used for the data analysis. Through analyzing the subjects’ perceptions on the parental roles, 4 types of parents were identified: parents who care about love and respect in parenting (type 1); parents who care about emotion and environment (type 2); parents who care about emotion and independence (type 3); parents who care about discipline and lesson (type 4). This study was able to use scientific methods to conceptualize the diverse and subjective perceptions of parents on parental roles in child-rearing. The classifications suggested in this study can serve as basic guidelines for parents to examine and evaluate their child-rearing methods, and possibly influence the parents to improve their parenting skills. This study is also expected to be capable of serving as foundational data for developing a program for parental roles.
