Abstract
This study is about the transformation pictures(變相畵) included in the first chapter of the 7th volume of the sutra copy of the 「Lotus Sutra(妙法蓮華經)」 which was written in gold letters on a dark blue paper and produced in Chinese Yuan Dynasty(元代). This sutra copy was produced in the first year in the reign of Emperor Zhishun(1330)(至順元年) and is currently in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Taiwan. In Japan and Korea, there exist many sutra copies, and their artistic values have been well recognized. In China, however, while there are many sutras printed from woodblocks, but not many sutra copies are known to still exist. Therefore, it is difficult to conduct a comparative research on sutra copies among East Asian countries. In this study, examined are the system and present state of the sutra copies produced in Chinese Yuan Dynasty, centering on the transformation pictures in the copy of 「Lotus Sutra」 in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan. Also, the themes represented in the pictures are thoroughly analyzed in comparison with the text of sutras. An analysis of the style of this particular transformation picture proved its unique value, when compared with the pictures from another sutra copy produced in the same period, and currently held at Tokugawa Art Museum(德川美術館) in Japan, and the sutra copies produced in the Goryeo Dynasty.
