Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the construction situation and architectural morphological significance of Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang (天道敎 中央大敎堂) in Seoul, which celebrated its 100th anniversary. It is important to discover and organize the real data of Donghak(東學) and Cheondogyo(天道敎). This study will contribute to the spatial content task of Donghak(東學), which is a native religion and culture of Korea in the future. The contents of this study are as follows. The construction of Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang (天道敎 中央大敎堂) was to secure the status of a universal religion for Donghak to break away from similar religions. It starts from the efforts of Son Byung-hee(孫秉熙) and Donghak(東學) believers(敎人). And in 1921, Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang(天道敎 中央大敎堂) was completed in Gyeongun-dong, Seoul. Japanese architect Nakamura(中村輿資平) designed Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang(天道敎中央大敎堂) by combining various historical architectural styles and cultural elements. Donghak(東學) believers(敎人) embodied the spirit of Donghak by engraving Gungeuljang(弓乙章) in the inner space of Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang(天道敎 中央大敎堂). The results of this study are as follows. First, a detailed discussion was conducted on the architectural morphological meaning of the Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang(天道敎 中央大敎堂) in Seoul, a native religious space in Korea. Second, the vertical and horizontal elements of the front seen from the Cheondogyo Jungangdaegyodang(天道敎中央大敎堂) signify the power of God and human intelligence. This is in line with the meaning of Sicheonju(侍天主), the spirit of Donghak(東學). Third, this study paved the basis for discussions on the space of Korean indigenous religions overlooked in Korean religious architecture.
