Abstract
This paper presents the front-end design of a backscattering tag at 900 MHz, using a transistor-based reflection amplifier and a phase modulator to maximize the differential radar cross-section of the tag. In addition, the front-end integrates a current sensor to actively control the bias current of the reflection amplifier, turning it off when the incoming RF power is large enough to operate without amplification, saving energy and preventing the tag from starting to oscillate.
