Abstract
In this paper an evaluation of the lightning performance of a transmission line with a novel PSCAD/EMTDC Monte-Carlo simulation approach is performed, which uses new leader progression model parameters specific for cap-and-pin insulators strings with arcing horns and obtained lightning location data. For various scenarios, flashover mitigation methods such as arresters, counterpoise and underbuilt wire technologies are investigated for an area with low lightning activity, but high soil resistivities.
