Abstract
In this paper a fast procedure for the design of interior rotor and outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous machines is presented. It is used for an initial investigation of the design space at an early development stage for aircraft application. It is extended with a lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) model to enable equally fast feedback on thermal stability. The high potential of this tool is demonstrated with the fast investigation of design choices on other design aspects in multiple engineering disciplines even at an early design stage. It is used to evaluate the use of outer/inner rotor, different coolants and cooling structures.
