Abstract
Drinking was traditional leisure activities in African society. With the rapid socio-economic change in the colonial era, drinking model of African society had experienced significant changes. Because of the financial self-reliance restraints on British colony, the colonial state relied heavily on the taxation of alcohol importation. Nevertheless, according to the racial ideology of British colonizers, the unregulated drinking of 'immature' African people will cause serious social problems. This notion led to alcoholic prohibition measures of British colonial administration. British colonizers' ambivalent attitudes toward African drinking behavior reflected the contradiction of British colonial rule. Nevertheless, these alcohol prohibition measures had stimulated violent protest by African groups, and the struggles against alcohol control became part of African nationalist struggle since the 1950s.
