Abstract
Carotid artery web is a rare, intimal variant of fibromuscular dysplasia. It is characterized by a focal shelf-like intimal fibrous tissue projecting from the posterior wall of the proximal internal carotid artery or carotid bulb. It is an easily omitted etiology of recurrent ischemic stroke in a young stroke patient without vascular risk factor. This article aims at introducing the carotid artery web and its relation with ischemic stroke. First, we briefly introduced the histopathology, prevalence, clinical presentations and pathophysiology of carotid artery web. Next, we discussed the typical presentation in neuroimages and compared several confusing common differential diagnoses in carotid artery. Then, we shared a case of carotid artery web with large vessel occlusion receiving endovascular thrombectomy. Lastly, we summarized the treatment strategies and the prevention of this disease.
