Advanced Practice Provider Professional Advancement Model: A 10-Year Experience

Abstract
In a large 700-bed academic medical center, a professional advancement model for advanced practice providers (APPs) provides a structured process to guide professional growth, development, and promotion. During a 10-year period, 217 APPs applied and 162 were promoted, resulting in a 74% promotion rate. Of the APPs promoted to senior nurse practitioner or senior physician assistant, 140 (86%) are still employed at the medical center. This advancement model provides a structured process to guide the APP workforce in developing clinical expertise and fostering professional development while improving retention and overall satisfaction.
