Abstract
The article examines the factors influencing the scale effect by analysing fatigue data for pipes with girth welds. The main causes of the scale effects include statistical effects, technological effects and stress gradient effects. The size effect for welded components is associated with the constant geometry of the weld toe. The statistical size effect results from increased likelihood of finding a large defect in a larger volume than in a small one. The effect of length of test welds is described, as well as the distribution of large effects.
