Abstract
This paper presents a formal model of social learning to explore how social learning and related organizational practices are likely to influence industry structure and competitive dynamics. The formal model focuses on a firm's clients for two reasons: (1) clients' effects on firms' innovative and operational capabilities have been carefully documented and widely exploited by managers; and (2) the empirical findings have been widely inferred to mean that firms should seek out sophisticated clients in order to learn more and develop stronger capabilities. The author modifies the traditional specification of experiential learning to accommodate quality effects and places it into a model of competing firms and self-interested clients. The author also uses an original comparative case study of two investment banks to illustrate the results. This working paper is available at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.
