Abstract
The article discusses updates on the use of corticosteroids and antiviral medications in treating patients with Bell's palsy. It cites a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, multifactorial trial which compared recovery of facial nerve function for patients randomized to receive 10 days of treatment with prednisolone, acyclovir, both agents, or placebo. It found out that a 10-day course of corticosteroid prednisolone 25 milligrams twice daily started within 72 hours significantly improves the chances of complete recovery. It notes that there is no added benefit from acyclovir.
