Abstract
Mid-career faculty comprise the largest segment of the academia, yet there is scant empirical evidence for the policies and practices related to mid-career faculty. The aim of this study was to deepen our understanding of the lives of mid-career faculty working at institutions of higher education in the United States, with focus on their productivity, and to suggest implications for future research on the subject. Using data from the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF) in combination with an analysis of recent articles related to mid-career faculty, this study identified factors related to the academic life of mid-career faculty. Results point to professional responsibilities (teaching and service) rather than personal factors (children and married life) as barriers to faculty productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
