Abstract
More experienced members who have held previous leadership roles within the specialty society can cultivate support within leadership and administration, while newer surgeons can add their perspectives on how the committee can be most helpful to surgeons-in-training and new graduates. After this group presented their concerns to the AOFAS board that female surgeons, who comprise approximately 10 percent of AOFAS membership, were not being proportionally represented in committee and speaking roles, the WLI was initially formed as a task force. As a growing number of female orthopaedic surgery residents go on to complete specialty fellowships and become attending surgeons, it is important that efforts to diversify the field of orthopaedics do not stop with resident recruitment.
