Abstract
The article discusses a triptych by Peter Paul Rubens, depicting a lamentation scene from Christian tradition, which was commissioned to commemorate the merchant Jan Michielsen. Known as the Michielsen Triptych, it is said to be a good example of Rubens' tendency to incorporate elements of traditional Netherlandish art, both in its format and in its structuring of space. The relationship between the center and side panels is analyzed in terms of Christian symbolism, and Rubens' style is described as connecting traditional Netherlandish iconography with early modern painting techniques.
