Abstract
The increasing incidence of corruption in Nigeria in general and the public service in particular and the poor state of infrastructure in the country have been issues of public concern. Many institutions have been established through enabling acts and reforms undertaken to fight corruption and develop infrastructure in Nigeria. In spite of these efforts, corruption still remains high while infrastructure is deteriorating. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of corruption and infrastructural development in Nigeria. The research design was content analysis of secondary data from transparency international for data on corruption and Mo Ibrahim Foundation for infrastructural development. These were presented in tables and analysed using percentage and average. The Pearson Correlation coefficient was used to test the hypothesis. The study confirmed a high incidence of corruption and poor infrastructural development in Nigeria. The hypothesis tested revealed a negatively strong significant relationship between corruption and infrastructural development in Nigeria (-.558). The study concludes that the high level of corruption has negatively affected infrastructural development in Nigeria. Therefore, a reduction in the rate of corruption is expected to improve infrastructural development in Nigeria. This can be achieved by strengthening anti-corruption agencies, improving corruption reporting system, judicial reform and enforcement of severer sanctions on corruption offenders. Others include reform of the structure of public utilities and strengthening of regulatory standards and citizen participation in infrastructural development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
