Abstract
This article discusses an outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections associated with salami products made with contaminated imported black and red pepper in the U.S. from July 2009 to April 2010. A total of 272 cases of Salmonella Montevideo infections were reported from 44 states and the District of Columbia. Twenty-six percent of the patients were hospitalized. An investigation led by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the pepper originated from three Asian countries.
