Abstract
The article details the opportunities and challenges faced by a group of British junior physicians working for a year in a South African surgical department. Topics covered include a comparison between South Africa and Great Britain in terms of the working environment for surgeons, South Africa's problem with morbidity and mortality and the other diseases that surgical departments deal with aside from trauma.
