Abstract
DC applications are becoming increasingly widespread. As a result, the number of arc flash events in such systems will increase. To ensure an appropriate system and personal protection, it is important to know occurring arc effects and suitable methods for protecting against the effects of a gas discharge. While studies so far only focused on AC networks, there is currently little reliable information available regarding arc faults with DC. For this reason, extensive LV DC investigations carried out in the IPH Berlin. As a result, different effects could be determined, which were elevated with regard to a risk assessment. In addition, a conventional (AC) active protection system was integrated into a DC voltage application, to check whether this method is also possible at DC level. This paper summarizes the most important findings with the aim of establishing a comparison of both forms of electrical voltage while arcing is coming up.
