1978년 캐나다 밴쿠버에서 의학학술지 편집인들이 비공식 모임을 갖고 학술지 투고 형식과 지침을 만든 것에서 기원한다. 이들 밴쿠버 그룹은 국제의학학술지편집인위원회(ICMJE: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors)로 발전하여 원고 투고 양식을 계속적으로 개정하고 있다. 임상의학, 생의학 분야 에서 주로 사용하고 있는 양식이다.

인용한 순서대로 괄호 ( )에 숫자로 표기하거나 위첨자로 표시한다. 한 참고문헌이 논문 내에 계속 인용될 때에는 같은 번호를 사용한다.

참고문헌 목록(예시)
본문 내 인용한 순서대로 참고문헌을 작성하며 저널명은 Index Medicus기준에 따라 약어로 표기하며, 저자명은 동양인명은 완전명으로, 서양인명은 성, 두문자(initial)로 표기한다. 학술지 논문 제목, 단행본 서명의 경우 첫 단어만 대문자로 표기한다.
