Abstract
Abstract:This article argues that Amy Herzog's 2017 play Mary Jane, in its depiction of a single parent struggling to care for a disabled child, complements the aims of the Capabilities Approach as articulated by economist Amartya Sen and philosopher Martha Nussbaum. The approach is unique among human development proposals for its focus on the optimal flourishing of every individual in such areas as education, employment, health, family life, political engagement, even recreation. The article also considers the issue of whether every audience member will appreciate the human development dimension of the play, or whether the play will simply appeal to sentiment.
