Abstract
[Wang Tozi Juesihao Shiqiao] (b Mengjin, Henan Province, 1592; d Apr 1652). Chinese calligrapher, painter, and scholar–official. He received his jinshi degree in 1622 and was promoted to Minister of Rites after a series of minor positions. After the collapse of the Ming dynasty, he served shortly as Grand Secretary in 1645 at the exiling Ming court and eventually surrendered to the conquering Manchu forces. Wang served the new regime until his death in 1652. This later career has aroused many controversies among his biographers. In his earlier years Wang Duo closely studied classical models of calligraphy, in particular those of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi (see Wang family (i)) reproduced in rubbing compendia (fatie). He was reportedly able to make exact copies of any selected characters from memory. During his service in the Hanlin Academy, he had opportunities to examine calligraphic works in the imperial collection. At the time he discovered Mi Fu as his new model. Around the age of fifty Wang developed his idiosyncratic style of linked cursive calligraphy (...
