근대의 대중매체 속에 투영된 여성과 여성다움

Abstract
The present study was conducted for testing the hypothesis that magazine could not play its role of awakening women in those days to their right identity. For this, we reviewed the line of male intellects that continued from to and , and discussed that treated women not as ‘persons (future leaders)’ but only as ‘women.’ In addition, from terms related to women, we extracted words describing the ideal image of women in those days, which were ‘mild,’ ‘nice,’ and ‘clean.’ These words were contrastive to masculine adjectives such as ‘powerful’ and ‘strong,’ and along with ‘waste’ and ‘vanity’ mentioned as women’s problems, these words prove that women were not regarded as workers responsible for the future of Korea. Lastly, we extracted metaphorical expressions of women and processed them statistically. According to the results, women were objects to be purchased and sold, and it was quite contrastive to editorials emphasizing women’s equality and freedom. This supports the hypothesis that women in modern discourses on women were images of women abstracted by male intellects and therefore they would show the difference between reality and ideal.
본고는 <신여성>이 당시 여성들의 정체를 올바르게 알려주는 역할은 수행하지 못했으리라는 가정을 실제 자료를 토대로 고찰하였다. 먼저 <소년> <청춘> <개벽>으로 이어지는 남성지식인의 계보를 검토하고, <신여성>은 ‘여성’을 ‘사람(미래의 지도자)’이 아닌 ‘여자’로만 다루었음을 논의하였다. 그리고 ‘여자’용례를 검색, 당시 이상적인 여성상으로 [순하다][좋다][깨끗하다]를 추출하였다. 이는 남자를 수식하는 형용사 [힘차다][굳세다]와 대조적일 뿐만 아니라 여자의 문제점으로 지적한 ‘소비, 허영심’과 얽혀서, 조선의 미래를 짊어질 역군으로 여성을 상정하지 않았음을 증명해 준다. 마지막으로 ‘여자’은유양상을 뽑아 통계처리하였는데, 여자는 팔고 사는 물건과 같은 존재였으며 이는 여성의 평등과 자유를 강조하는 논설과 대조적이었다. 이는 근대적인 여성담론 속의 여성은 남성지식인에 의해 추상화된 여성이며 따라서 현실과 이상의 차이를 보여줄 것이라는 전제를 뒷받침해 주었다.
