Abstract
Rheumatic diseases are common and an important cause of reduced quality of life, increased comorbidity, and reduced life expectancy. These diseases also result in a significant socioeconomic burden. A clinical-pathologic framework helps categorize patients who present with signs and symptoms suggestive of a rheumatic disease. A systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment can reduce the adverse clinical and economic consequences of these diseases.
