Abstract
This article focuses on the role of the Karaites in the economic development of the tobacco industry of the Russian Empire from the middle of the nineteenth and to the early twentieth centuries. The studied materials are preserved in the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea, the Russian State Historical Archive, the State Archive of Mykolaiv region, various thematic directories, collections of statistics and materials of periodicals. It is concluded that the Karaites made a significant contribution to the development of economic and social life of Russia in general and of the Tauride province (gubernia) in particular. One of the main activities of the Karaites was trading and crafts related to tobacco growing and industrial production of tobacco products. The Karaites supplied the products of the tobacco factories to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kharkov, Odessa, Khabarovsk, Ekaterinoslav, and other cities of the Russian Empire. Large tobacco factories owned by the Karaites operated in the major industrial centers of the country. The products of these enterprises enjoyed wide popularity among various segments of the population.
