Highlights •Desulfurization sorbent is obtained by electrospinning, pre-oxidation and microwave carbonization.•Microwave carbonization endowed porous structure and high iron content on the surface of CNFs.•Microwave carbonized sorbents involve a desulfurization performance of 3.81 g S 100 g−1 sorbent.
