Highlights •Conductive materials and rumen microbes increased CH4 production by 10.4 %–32.9 %.•Clostridium could participate in DIET with Methanothrix via conductive materials.•Conductive materials promoted the abundance of acetyl-CoA synthase-related genes.•Rumen microbes promoted hydrogenotrophic methanogens and methanogenic pathways.
